The Mundane World

"I have love, blue skies, rainbows and Hallmark cards, and that has to be enough. It has to be enough, but it's everything in the world and everything in the world is plenty for me. It seems just rude to beg the invisible for more." - Penn Jillette

Turntable.fm’s co-founder Billy Chasen has his business on lock, literally. You don’t use keys to enter Turntable.fm’s HQ, you send a text message from a white-listed phone number and voila, it opens. This is a much smarter, safer and cheaper option than handing out a ton of keys.
UPDATE: This won a Twilio prize and he explains how to build one yourself.

I NEEDED THIS IN BOONE AND NOW IT EXISTS.

Neat.  Smarter?  Maybe.  Safer?  Really, in an age were major corporations and governments are being threatened and brought to their knees by hackers, this seems safer?  Everyone has a computer in their home, and you can learn how to hack.  Not everyone has a key-cutting machine in their garage.  Also, cheaper?  I don’t know where you’re getting your keys cut, but the Home Depot near me does it pretty cheap.  Also, who hands out tons of keys?  I’ve handed out exactly two keys in my life.  One was to my girlfriend (who I’m now married to), and the other was to my best friend when he moved in and started paying the electrical bill.  I know the new ways are fun and interesting, but being new doesn’t automatically make them better.  The old ways work from time to time as well.
